Halifax County Fuel Prices Remain High Despite National Decline

Fuel prices in Halifax County remain elevated despite a downward trend observed across the United States. As of March 15, 2024, the national average for gasoline is reported at $2.84, while North Carolina’s average stands slightly lower at $2.68. In Halifax County, residents are facing an average of $2.86, higher than neighboring counties like Northampton, which averages $2.84.

In comparison, fuel prices are notably cheaper in Edgecombe County at $2.62, Nash County at $2.73, and Warren County at $2.74. Across the Virginia state line, fuel costs are also lower, averaging $2.80 in Greensville County and $2.66 in Mecklenburg County.

Some local stations have reported even lower prices. According to data from GasBuddy, certain gas stations in Tarboro are offering prices around $2.36, while Rocky Mount stations list prices between $2.58 and $2.59. Membership warehouse stations such as Costco and Sam’s Club typically have different pricing models that allow them to offer lower fuel prices due to their membership-based revenue.

Scott Aman, President of New Dixie Oil Corp., which operates multiple fuel stations in Halifax County, has faced scrutiny from residents concerned about the higher prices. Aman attributes these costs to various factors including product quality, supplier costs, taxes, operational expenses, and local competition. He emphasized the importance of offering high-quality fuel, stating, “We sell top-tier branded fuels with the best additives.”

While Aman acknowledges the frustration felt by consumers regarding the price differences, he also notes that fuel prices can vary significantly by market area. “New competition usually impacts a market, temporarily driving prices down for several weeks or months. Eventually, that market will level off,” he explained.

In Halifax County, national competitors such as Sheetz, Murphy, and Speedway contribute to local pricing dynamics. The entry of these competitors has historically led to temporary price reductions, although fluctuations remain common. Sheetz Public Affairs Manager Nick Ruffner stated that the company is dedicated to providing competitive fuel prices, which can vary based on transportation costs, crude oil prices, and local market conditions.

In the City of Roanoke Rapids, plans are underway for a new 7-ELEVEN to replace the old Carolina BBQ and Chicken restaurant on Julian R. Allsbrook Highway. This location is frequented by travelers on Interstate 95, highlighting the area’s strategic importance for fuel and convenience shopping.

Despite the complexities of the fuel market, Aman expressed a commitment to competitive pricing. “In summary, we make every attempt to compete in every market, knowing that each one may have its unique challenges,” he said. This statement underscores the ongoing struggle for consumers in Halifax County who are navigating the intricacies of local fuel pricing amid wider national trends.
