Klarna Launches Pay Later Feature for UK Google Pay Users
Klarna has announced the launch of its pay later options for Google Pay users in the United Kingdom. As of February 16, 2024, users can utilize Klarna’s interest-free payment features at checkout, allowing them to access the company’s “pay-in-3” installment plan. This development marks a significant step for the Swedish FinTech firm, which aims to enhance user convenience in digital transactions.
With this integration, Google Pay users can manage their purchases, returns, and repayments directly from the Klarna app. Raji Behal, the head of Western and Southern Europe, U.K., and Ireland for Klarna, emphasized the importance of this partnership, stating, “This is a big moment for us and a major step towards our goal of being available at every checkout, everywhere.” He highlighted that the collaboration with Google simplifies the payment process for millions of shoppers.
The partnership coincides with new regulations introduced by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), which aim to enhance consumer protections for users of buy now, pay later (BNPL) services. Under these new guidelines, lenders must be authorized by the FCA to offer BNPL loans and are required to conduct affordability checks to ensure that borrowers can repay their loans. Sarah Pritchard, Deputy Chief Executive of the FCA, remarked, “We want the buy now, pay later sector to thrive. It provides an important source of credit to many, and we will continue to support firms who want to develop innovative new products.”
The growing acceptance of BNPL options reflects a shift in consumer behavior. Research conducted by PYMNTS Intelligence indicates that BNPL services have evolved from being a convenient checkout option for non-essential items to a means of managing essential recurring expenses. The study reveals that users who apply BNPL to necessary bills are more likely to incur interest charges than those who use it solely for discretionary purchases.
This trend highlights the changing landscape of consumer finance, where paying over time is becoming increasingly essential for maintaining financial stability. The report suggested that for many households, using BNPL services has transitioned from indulgence to necessity, underscoring the importance of responsible lending practices in this space.
The collaboration between Klarna and Google Pay aims to capitalize on the vast number of transactions processed through Google, which reportedly sees over a billion shopping interactions daily. Lisa Yokoyama, Director of Product Management at Google Pay, stated that this expanded partnership illustrates their commitment to providing users with flexible payment options. “With people shopping on Google over a billion times a day, this broader footprint provides even more checkout options to help businesses drive tangible growth,” she noted.
As Klarna continues to integrate its services with major digital payment platforms, the company is poised to play a significant role in the evolving landscape of consumer finance in the U.K. The combination of innovative payment solutions and regulatory oversight aims to ensure that consumers can benefit from flexible payment options while managing their financial health responsibly.
