Billie Lourd Celebrates Mother Carrie Fisher’s Legacy Through Joy
Billie Lourd, the daughter of the late actress Carrie Fisher, recently shared a heartfelt tribute on social media, reflecting on her mother’s enduring influence in her life. Nine years after Fisher’s passing at the age of 60, Lourd emphasized the importance of joy amidst grief, particularly through her experiences as a mother.
On December 27, 2023, Lourd posted on Instagram, illustrating how her children, Kingston, aged five, and Jackson, aged three, have helped her find happiness even in the shadow of her loss. She wrote, “I started thinking about how this joy wouldn’t be possible without my mom,” as she observed her daughter playing with her father, Bryan Lourd. Lourd articulated that her mother’s spirit lives on through the joy her children bring her, stating, “This joy only exists because she existed.”
Reflecting on her emotional journey, Lourd acknowledged the complex nature of grief. She noted that while this anniversary brings joy, her feelings of loss could shift unexpectedly throughout the day. “Grief takes on many shapes,” she mentioned, adding that she was currently embracing a “bittersweet grieful joy.” Her mother’s wisdom resonated with her as she quoted, “Nothing is ever really over. Just over there.” Lourd emphasized that Fisher’s legacy continues through her children and the happiness they share.
In her ongoing journey of mourning, Lourd has been candid about her experiences, expressing gratitude for the ability to discuss grief with others. “One of the most gratifying and important things that I get to do is talking about grief,” she told E! News. She stressed the significance of open conversations about grief, noting, “Before I experienced it myself, I didn’t have that many people that I could refer to that went through something similar.”
While Fisher was unable to meet her grandchildren, Lourd has ensured that her mother’s legacy remains alive. She shared a touching anecdote about introducing her children to Fisher’s iconic role as Princess Leia in the original Star Wars trilogy. “A year ago, I showed them [Return of the] Jedi for the first time, and they were a little bit confused,” she recounted, explaining their initial surprise at seeing their grandmother on screen. “I sat behind them and cried while they watched it,” Lourd added, highlighting the emotional significance of sharing her mother’s work with her children.
As Billie Lourd continues to navigate life without her mother, she cherishes the moments that allow her to keep Fisher’s spirit alive. Through her posts and public discussions, she not only honors her mother’s legacy but also provides comfort and connection to others experiencing similar losses.
