Fathom Film Group Expands Scripted Division with Nicole Butler

Fathom Film Group, the Canadian production company known for its work on The Defector: Escape from North Korea, has appointed Nicole Butler to lead its scripted development. Butler, who previously served as co-CEO of Pier 21 Films and executive producer of the Crave dramedy Late Bloomer, will focus on creating new scripted projects, particularly in the genres of drama and comedy.

Under the continued leadership of Ann Shin, who remains CEO, the company aims to expand its portfolio beyond unscripted content. Butler’s appointment follows the recent hiring of Philip Svoboda as Head of Business Affairs and the launch of a true crime vertical on YouTube. Both Shin and Butler are expected to attend the upcoming Prime Time Ottawa event.

Strategic Focus on Scripted Content

Fathom Film Group has gained recognition primarily for its unscripted productions, including the Oscar longlisted documentary My Enemy, My Brother. Currently, the company has two true crime documentary series in production and four feature documentaries in development. Additionally, there is a growing slate of comedy and drama projects, one of which is a procedural series based on a project developed by Shin.
