The director of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy, Naoki Hamaguchi, has expressed his thoughts on a notable shift in gaming preferences among younger developers at Square Enix. He observed that many new employees cite Final Fantasy 13 as their favorite game, rather than the classic Final Fantasy 6. This changing landscape reflects the evolution of the company as it welcomes new talent.

In an interview with GamerBraves, Hamaguchi remarked, “The company has been growing and changing as new employees come in and the company just keeps going on.” He highlighted that younger players are less likely to mention Final Fantasy 6, a beloved installment from more than 30 years ago, and instead reference Final Fantasy 13, which debuted in 2009. This generational preference underscores the passage of time and the shifting interests in gaming culture.

While Final Fantasy 13 faced criticism for its linear gameplay and limited side quests, it nevertheless captivated a generation of players. For many younger fans, it represented their introduction to the JRPG genre. Hamaguchi’s perspective resonates with those who experienced the franchise’s earlier titles, as they may feel a sense of nostalgia and loss in seeing the past overshadowed by newer installments.

The Final Fantasy series, particularly titles from 6 to 10, is often celebrated for its rich narratives and diverse gameplay mechanics. Each game contributed to a golden era for both the franchise and Square Enix. Yet, as the gaming industry evolves, so too do the preferences of its audience. Future developers may well have their own favorite titles, including Final Fantasy 15 and beyond.

Despite the legacy of earlier games, access remains an issue. Currently, Final Fantasy 13 and its sequels are not available on PS5 or Xbox Series X/S, although they can be found on platforms like Steam. Hamaguchi may face a new challenge in addressing this gap once he completes work on the highly anticipated Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3.

Hamaguchi also expressed his belief that the gaming industry should embrace diversity in gameplay styles. He stated that both action and turn-based games “should evolve for the better.” This sentiment echoes the ongoing dialogue within the industry about innovation and the necessity of catering to a broad range of player preferences.

As the gaming landscape continues to shift, the insights from industry veterans like Hamaguchi remind us of the importance of recognizing both the past and present. The Final Fantasy series serves as a testament to the enduring impact of storytelling and gameplay innovation, bridging generational divides while inspiring new fans.
