Game Developer Shutaro Iida Passes Away at 52, Leaves Legacy
Shutaro Iida, a prominent game developer known for his work on the acclaimed *Castlevania* series, has passed away at the age of 52 following a nearly two-year battle with cancer. His family announced his death on February 10, 2026, through his social media account, expressing gratitude for the support and kindness received during his illness.
Iida’s career spanned several iconic titles, and he was most recently involved in the development of *Bloodstained: The Scarlet Engagement*, a sequel to the successful 2019 game *Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night*. He revealed his cancer diagnosis in 2024, stating he would step back from game development to prioritize his health.
Tributes from the Gaming Community
The gaming community has responded with an outpouring of tributes, highlighting Iida’s significant contributions to the industry. One particularly heartfelt tribute came from fellow Konami veteran and *Bloodstained* lead developer Koji Igarashi. Igarashi, who had collaborated with Iida since *Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow* in 2003, shared his reflections on their long-standing partnership.
“In the early hours of February 10, 2026, our Creative Director, Shutaro, passed away peacefully after battling cancer for approximately one and a half years,” Igarashi wrote. “It is no exaggeration to say that numerous titles hailed as masterpieces would not have been possible without his contributions. His talent was truly exceptional.”
Igarashi expressed profound gratitude for Iida’s role in the success of *Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night*, attributing much of the game’s achievement to Iida’s unwavering support throughout their two-decade collaboration. “Looking back, he supported me for over twenty years,” Igarashi remarked, emphasizing Iida’s dedicated approach to game development.
Continuing Iida’s Legacy
As the development of *Bloodstained: The Scarlet Engagement* continues, Igarashi reassured fans that the project remains infused with Iida’s vision. “We shall carry forward his aspirations and see the game through to completion, determined not to disappoint him,” he stated.
Igarashi also extended his deepest condolences to Iida’s family, acknowledging the collective grief felt by those who knew and worked with him. “His passing is profoundly regrettable, yet knowing he is now free from suffering brings a sense of relief,” he added, reflecting on the challenges Iida faced during his illness.
The gaming industry has lost a visionary talent whose influence will continue to resonate through the titles he helped create. As fans and colleagues remember Iida, they celebrate not only his professional achievements but also the passion and dedication he brought to the world of video games. May Shutaro Iida rest in peace.
