Gorillaz made a striking debut as the musical guest on Saturday Night Live, delivering an electrifying performance that showcased both their classic hits and new material. The British virtual band opened the show with “Clint Eastwood,” the lead single from their self-titled 2001 album. This iconic track, which Rolling Stone ranked as number 38 on its list of the 100 best songs of the 2000s, echoes themes from the 1966 film The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, in which actor Clint Eastwood starred. Joining Gorillaz on stage was Del the Funky Homosapien, who rapped the verses, adding to the song’s nostalgic energy.

Following their classic hit, the group transitioned to “The Moon Cave,” a track from their latest album, The Mountain, released in 2023 as a follow-up to Cracker Island. The performance featured a diverse ensemble, including singer-songwriter Asha Puthli, rapper Black Thought, and sitar virtuoso Anoushka Shankar. Each song on the fifteen-track album features at least one collaborator, with notable contributions from the late guitarist and singer Bobby Womack and Dave Jolicoeur of De La Soul.

In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, band co-creator Damon Albarn explained his intention behind “The Moon Cave.” He stated, “I just thought, if we’re going to talk about the subject of death, I need some people who are dead to help me talk about it.” This creative approach reflects the personal losses each band member has faced, as well as the transformative experiences gained from a formative trip to India.

The album incorporates Indian classical instrumentation and features lyrics in multiple languages, including Hindi. Other notable tracks include “The Manifesto” and “Damascus,” further showcasing the band’s eclectic musical style.

Gorillaz is set to embark on The Mountain tour later this month in the U.K., offering fans a chance to experience their innovative sound live. Additionally, the group is scheduled to headline the prestigious Primavera Sound festival in Barcelona in June and the Shaky Knees festival in Atlanta in September, promising a summer filled with vibrant performances.

With their unique blend of virtual and live elements, Gorillaz continues to push the boundaries of contemporary music, captivating audiences around the world.
