Ocean Beach Church Launches Monthly Film Series on Social Issues

A new film series at Resurrection Church in Ocean Beach is providing a platform for community discussions on significant social issues. Titled “Cinema of Resistance,” the series occurs monthly, offering free screenings followed by panel discussions. The first event of the year took place on January 5, 2024, featuring both local experts and engaging films.

The series is curated by Dr. John McAteer, a philosopher with a focus on film. Each month, he invites guest panelists to explore themes related to the featured film, fostering dialogue about contemporary societal challenges. The inaugural session of 2024 examined the classic horror film Night of the Living Dead through the lens of media influence, with a representative from KPBS in attendance. Another guest from Voice of San Diego discussed the use of Casablanca as a propaganda tool during World War II.

In December 2023, the series highlighted climate activism with a screening of How to Blow Up a Pipeline, a film that follows a group of eight young individuals determined to sabotage oil infrastructure. The discussion featured a climate activist from UC San Diego, who elaborated on the film’s themes and real-world implications.

Creating a Space for Dialogue

Dr. McAteer conceived the idea for “Cinema of Resistance” as a way to merge his passions for philosophy and cinematography. He observed a growing need for public discourse on divisive topics, particularly in light of rising anti-democratic sentiments in the United States.

“I wanted to create a space for people to process their thoughts and feelings about things going on in the country,” McAteer explained. He emphasized the importance of bringing together individuals who share an interest in social justice, aiming to inspire collective action towards the common good.

The initiative has garnered attention through fliers and social media outreach, attracting a diverse audience eager to engage with complex issues. McAteer envisions the series expanding its scope to include subjects such as immigration, gun control, and historical injustices like the Holocaust.

McAteer described the discussions as “not a debate supporting one point of view over another,” but rather as an exploration of “what we should do” in response to pressing social challenges.

Participants are encouraged to reflect on how to reverse any trends towards authoritarianism while reinforcing democratic values. “The price of valuing democracy is resisting anti-democratic forces in our country,” McAteer stated, underlining the relevance of these discussions in today’s political climate.
