Patriots QB Drake Maye Backs Teammates Amid Assault Allegations

New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye has publicly expressed his support for teammates Stefon Diggs and Christian Barmore, who face serious assault allegations. During a press conference on December 31, 2023, Maye stated, “I’m going to support them any way I can, support my teammates, and I love those guys.” His comments come as the team prepares for the playoffs, holding a 13-3 record and sitting atop the AFC East.

Diggs, a wide receiver aged 32, faces charges including felony strangulation or suffocation and misdemeanor assault and battery, following an alleged incident involving his personal chef in early December. Barmore, 26, has been charged with assault and battery on a family or household member, stemming from accusations made by a woman reportedly in a relationship with him.

Maye highlighted the personal connection he shares with both players, saying, “Those two, really everybody, I’ve really got a good relationship with.” He added that he is available to assist them in any way they need, emphasizing the importance of team unity.

While discussing Diggs’ contributions to the team, Maye remarked, “Stef, man, he means a lot to this team.” He described Diggs as a motivating presence on the field, noting his enthusiasm for encouraging younger players and his commitment to team success.

The quarterback also praised Barmore’s character, stating, “He’s passionate about football, passionate about the game.” Maye believes both players genuinely care for each other and for the team, which he sees as a vital aspect of their camaraderie.

As the allegations have surfaced, Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel has faced scrutiny over his response. During the same press conference, Vrabel remarked, “These are allegations. Meier expressed confidence that the truth would emerge in court, asserting, “Stefon looks forward to establishing the truth in a court of law.” Regarding Barmore, he reiterated his belief that the evidence would show no criminal conduct occurred in that case.
