Real Estate Developer Anita Verma-Lallian Ventures into Film Industry
Anita Verma-Lallian, a successful real estate developer from Arizona, is shifting her focus from the booming field of artificial intelligence to the film industry. At 43, she has spent years developing land for data centers across Arizona, capitalizing on the growing demand from tech companies. Instead of continuing down a traditional entrepreneurial path, Verma-Lallian is channeling her profits into film production, including the establishment of a significant studio backlot in her home state.
Verma-Lallian’s new venture involves financing Camelback Productions, a company that has supported projects such as the sex comedy Doin’ It, featuring content creator Lilly Singh, and a film starring Kal Penn, as well as Prima Facie, a project led by Cynthia Erivo based on a popular stage play. She is in the process of acquiring approximately 1,500 acres of land west of Phoenix, aiming to create a comprehensive entertainment hub that will include retail and leisure options.
The strategic location near a major freeway is designed for easy access to Southern California, with Phoenix located roughly six hours away on the I-10. Verma-Lallian believes that recent tax incentives, favorable climate conditions, and flexible union regulations will make Arizona an attractive alternative for filmmakers, positioning it alongside New Mexico in the Southwest.
Raised in Chicago by Indian immigrant parents, Verma-Lallian entered her father’s real estate business after graduating from the University of Southern California’s MBA program in 2007. She ventured out on her own about six years ago, building a network of investment partners, including the well-known investor Chamath Palihapitiya. Her real estate acumen has led to significant financial success; last year, she sold a 2,100-acre site for $160 million, quadrupling her investment.
Verma-Lallian’s connection to artificial intelligence extends beyond her real estate endeavors. She employs AI to analyze property acquisitions, assess the commercial viability of scripts, and even decode nuanced communications from industry insiders. She plans to incorporate an “AI studio” into her backlot, although the specifics of how this technology will be utilized remain to be seen.
While the entertainment industry has seen many investors with backgrounds in unrelated sectors, Verma-Lallian aims to break the mold by focusing on underrepresented narratives and her deep passion for storytelling. She has expressed her fondness for romantic comedies and the transformative potential of film.
Verma-Lallian recently drew attention in Los Angeles for purchasing Matthew Perry‘s Pacific Palisades home, where the actor tragically passed away in October 2023. She clarified that her interest in the property was predominantly due to its scenic views.
The ambitious backlot project, if realized, could emerge as one of the largest in the United States. Despite skepticism from industry insiders questioning her motivations, Verma-Lallian remains committed to her vision. “People [in Hollywood] say, ‘You’re doing well; why are you doing this to yourself?’” she noted. “But it’s a fascinating industry — something where you can actually change culture.”
This story underscores the evolving landscape of film production and the potential for innovation at the intersection of technology and creative arts, as Verma-Lallian embarks on her new cinematic journey.
