Search Intensifies for Missing Nancy Guthrie, Authorities Seek Public Help
Authorities in Tucson, Arizona, are intensifying their search efforts for Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of Today Show co-host Savannah Guthrie, who was reported missing on February 1, 2024. Following a series of developments in the case, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos indicated that the investigation could take longer than initially anticipated, stating, “Maybe it’s weeks or months or years from now. But we won’t quit. We’re going to find Nancy.”
During a press conference on February 13, Sheriff Nanos shared that investigators are “looking hard” for answers. He expressed the emotional toll the search is taking on the team, noting, “It’s exhausting, these ups and downs. But we will keep moving forward.” The investigation has led to the discovery of several gloves near Nancy’s property, as well as unidentified DNA evidence collected from her home.
Details of the Investigation and Evidence Found
Authorities reported that the gloves were found approximately two miles from Nancy’s residence. In a press release, Sheriff Nanos clarified, “Reports that a glove was found inside the residence or on the property are inaccurate. All collected evidence has been submitted for laboratory analysis.” The DNA found at Nancy’s home does not match her or individuals in close contact with her, prompting investigators to work on identifying its origin.
On February 12, the FBI released doorbell camera footage highlighting a potential suspect described as a male, approximately 5’9” to 5’10” tall, with an average build. He was seen wearing a black 25-liter “Ozark Trail hiker pack” backpack. Despite concerns regarding Nancy’s health, Sheriff Nanos confirmed no evidence has surfaced indicating her death. “I don’t have any reason to believe she’s not alive,” he told reporters.
Nancy was last seen at her Tucson home around 9:30 p.m. on January 31. Her family reported her missing the following day after she failed to attend a scheduled church service. Initial searches by her loved ones prompted a call to law enforcement around noon on February 1.
Community Support and Family Pleas
Savannah Guthrie addressed the public on February 2, thanking everyone for their support while urging anyone with information to contact the Pima County Sheriff’s Department. “Right now, our focus remains on the safe return of our dear Nancy,” she stated.
The community has rallied around the Guthrie family, with co-hosts from the Today Show expressing their concern. “We love Nancy,” said Jenna Bush Hager, emphasizing the importance of community support during this difficult time. Fellow co-host Sheinelle Jones echoed similar sentiments, encouraging viewers to provide any information, no matter how small.
Authorities have declared Nancy’s home a crime scene, indicating they believe a crime occurred. Sheriff Nanos noted that Nancy’s limited mobility raised concerns about foul play: “We know she didn’t just walk out of there.”
As the investigation continues, Sheriff Nanos highlighted the urgency of finding Nancy, particularly due to her daily medication needs. He emphasized the importance of community assistance, stating, “We need some help. This is an 84-year-old lady who suffers from some physical ailments.”
In a poignant public plea, Savannah, along with her siblings, expressed their desperation for information regarding their mother’s safety. “Her health, her heart is fragile. She lives in constant pain. She is without any medicine. She needs it to survive,” Savannah stated in an emotional video shared on social media.
The FBI has increased the reward for information leading to Nancy’s location from $50,000 to $100,000, hoping to encourage public involvement in the case. As the days pass, both law enforcement and Nancy’s family remain hopeful for her safe return.
