73-Year-Old Pool Supervisor Walks 20,000 Steps Daily to Stay Fit

Victor Chan, a 73-year-old pool supervisor from Singapore, continues to defy age with his remarkable physical fitness. Working five days a week, Chan walks approximately 20,000 steps daily, a routine he attributes to his active lifestyle and commitment to health.

As a former bodybuilder, Chan has long understood the importance of exercise in maintaining well-being. He started bodybuilding in his youth, motivated by friends who introduced him to the sport. As he reminisced, “Looking fit was part of the appeal, and it was motivating to see people notice our physiques.” His dedication led him to compete in community-level competitions, shaping his lifelong passion for fitness.

After years in bodybuilding, Chan transitioned to running, partially due to his job at a military training facility, a position he has held since 1978. He has completed ultramarathons and Ironman races, but this active lifestyle faced challenges when he encountered health issues at age 50.

At that point, Chan began experiencing early symptoms of intervertebral disc degeneration. “It was scary, and I felt life no longer had meaning,” he reflected. The pain made even simple tasks like walking and sleeping difficult. Fortunately, physiotherapy offered relief, and he adopted a new focus on stretching and core exercises. “These days, my back no longer bothers me,” he noted, emphasizing the importance of adaptability in fitness routines.

Chan continues to prioritize activity in his life, even if it means adjusting the intensity of his workouts. He walks along the pool where he works, opting to avoid public transport whenever possible. This commitment to movement reflects his philosophy on aging: staying active is essential for a fulfilling life.

In addition to his personal fitness journey, Chan is a member of Team Strong Silvers, a group of older adults in Singapore dedicated to healthy aging. Since joining in 2016, he has participated in workshops and exercise sessions that inspire fellow seniors to remain physically active. “People are often amazed when they find out I can do the splits,” he said, highlighting the flexibility he has maintained through regular practice.

Maintaining physical fitness is only part of Chan’s approach to health. He also emphasizes the importance of a balanced diet, largely influenced by his wife’s cooking. “She uses very little oil and salt, and even the rice we eat is basmati rice, which is healthier,” he explained. While he enjoys meat and occasional desserts, he prefers vegetable dishes, acknowledging that healthy eating is a significant aspect of his lifestyle.

Social connections play a vital role in Chan’s well-being. He values conversations with neighbors and colleagues, often younger than himself, understanding that socializing combats loneliness. “Staying connected gives life balance, and it’s just as important as staying active,” he stated.

For those over 70 interested in starting an exercise routine, Chan advises beginning gradually. “Find a local community center offering healthy activities like walking groups,” he suggested. Engaging in exercise with others not only promotes fitness but also fosters friendships, making it easier to maintain motivation.
