Historic Szeleczky Palace Reopens After €5.2 Million Renovation

A magnificent 18th-century baroque palace in Hungary has undergone an extensive restoration, officially reopening to the public after a remarkable investment of €5.2 million. The Szeleczky Palace, located in the village of Boconád in Heves County, was revitalized with financial support from the government, which contributed €2.59 million to the project. The renovation was celebrated in a handover ceremony attended by Péter Szijjártó, Hungary’s Foreign Minister, on October 3, 2023.

The Szeleczky Palace, commissioned in 1760 by Márton Szeleczky II, has a rich history that reflects the changing tides of Hungary. Once a noble seat, the U-shaped building has served various purposes over the years, including a nursery and a school. Its striking architecture and lush gardens make it a significant landmark in Boconád, providing a glimpse into the country’s baroque heritage.

A Journey Through Time

The palace features breathtaking murals depicting the four seasons, along with rococo frescoes believed to be crafted by local artist Jakab Heller. By 1847, the estate had transitioned to the Gosztonyi family, who fled during the tumultuous events following Hungary’s wartime defeat and subsequent Soviet occupation. The building suffered neglect over the years, with looters stripping its furnishings and the structure falling into disrepair. It became a state farm machinery depot, and only minimal funding in the 1980s allowed for limited repairs.

After years of deterioration, the recent renovation marks a significant turning point for the Szeleczky Palace. Mayor István Kis shared details of the comprehensive restoration, which addressed both aesthetics and functionality. The project included revitalizing the facade, replacing windows, upgrading electrical and plumbing systems, and restoring the nursery wing. The complete overhaul of the roof and the restoration of the interior were key components of the renovation, enhancing the palace’s historical integrity.

A Vision for the Future

Looking ahead, Mayor Kis envisions the Szeleczky Palace as a vibrant visitor hub and community focal point that will attract tourists and locals alike. The gardens have also been beautifully restored, contributing to the palace’s allure and potential for hosting various events and activities.

During the inauguration, Minister Szijjártó expressed his pride in returning this cultural treasure to the community. “We are thrilled to hand back this jewel to Boconád and its surroundings in fitting splendour,” he remarked. He emphasized the resilience of the Hungarian people, stating, “We cherish our history. We stand tall after the harshest trials. The bloodiest dictatorships couldn’t break our spine.”

As the Szeleczky Palace reopens its doors, it stands not only as a testament to Hungary’s rich architectural heritage but also as a symbol of hope and renewal for the community.
