Prime Minister Drew Celebrates New St. Kitts–Nevis Defence Force Recruits

On March 12, 2026, Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew addressed the recruits of the St. Kitts–Nevis Defence Force during their Passing Out Ceremony at Elquemedo Willett Park in Nevis. This event marked a significant milestone as it was the first time the Basic Military Training Course and the ceremony were held on the island. The newly commissioned soldiers celebrated the completion of rigorous training, demonstrating their commitment to national service.

During his remarks, Prime Minister Drew acknowledged the discipline and perseverance exhibited by the recruits throughout their training. He reflected on their transformation from civilians to soldiers, emphasizing the physical, mental, and emotional challenges they faced. “Months ago, you were civilians, each bringing your own hopes, ambitions, and expectations,” he stated. “Through the rigours of this basic military course, you have been challenged physically, mentally, and emotionally.”

Dr. Drew commended the recruits for enduring long days and demanding nights, learning the importance of teamwork and discipline. He underscored the Defence Force’s critical role in the Federation’s national security, calling it one of the nation’s most vital institutions.

“Today you stand as soldiers, members of a proud and historic institution — the St. Kitts–Nevis Defence Force,” Dr. Drew noted. “The Defence Force represents one of the most critical pillars of our national security architecture. It stands as a symbol of discipline, readiness, and unwavering loyalty to the Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis.”

Encouraging the new soldiers to uphold the Federation’s values, the Prime Minister highlighted the national motto, “Country Above Self.” He conveyed that by stepping forward to serve, they embody this principle. “You have answered the call to protect and defend your beloved country and accepted the responsibility of standing on the front lines of national service,” he added.

The ceremony was attended by notable figures, including Her Excellency Dame Marcella Liburd, who inspected the parade of the newly commissioned soldiers. Other dignitaries included Deputy Governor-General for Nevis Her Honour Hyleta Liburd, Deputy Prime Minister Dr. Geoffrey Hanley, and Premier of Nevis Mark Brantley, along with family members and friends of the graduates.
