California DOJ Investigates Eaton Fire Evacuations in Altadena

The California Department of Justice has initiated an investigation into the emergency response during the Eaton fire, which affected the historically Black community of West Altadena. During a press conference on February 12, 2024, California Attorney General Rob Bonta emphasized the need for clarity regarding the emergency response. “We know that evacuation warnings for the historically Black neighborhood of West Altadena came many hours after these same warnings were sent to the rest of Altadena,” Bonta stated. The Eaton fire, which occurred last year, devastated over 14,000 acres of land, resulting in the loss of at least 19 lives and the destruction of more than 9,000 structures.
