Community Marches to Honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on MLK Day
Approximately 100 people participated in a march through downtown Hickory, North Carolina, on January 15, 2024, to commemorate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The event, organized by the Hickory NAACP, involved a 1.25-mile walk from Lenoir-Rhyne University to the Ridgeview Recreation Center, where community members gathered to reflect on King’s legacy.
Participants of all ages walked together, with many carrying signs and chanting in unison. The atmosphere was filled with a spirit of unity and remembrance. As they approached their final destination, members of the Lenoir-Rhyne A Cappella Choir performed “We Shall Overcome,” a song that has become synonymous with the Civil Rights Movement.
The march not only honored Dr. King’s contributions to civil rights but also served as a platform for local voices advocating for social justice. Events like this highlight the ongoing importance of King’s message in today’s society, particularly within the context of current civil rights challenges.
