Congregation Beth Israel Revitalizes Community with New Facility

The historic Congregation Beth Israel in Los Angeles’ Fairfax District is set to undergo a significant transformation. On a recent virtual journey through his childhood neighborhood, Dr. David Pepper discovered that the original synagogue had been replaced by a six-story building extending along Beverly Boulevard. Intrigued by this change, he reached out to Cantor Steven Walfish, who shared the exciting news about the upcoming development. “The new structure is a soon-to-be-open, state-of-the-art, senior housing building, with assisted living and memory care facilities. And, a newly designed Congregation Beth Israel synagogue will be on the ground floor,” Walfish explained.

The initiative is the result of a ten-year vision spearheaded by Cantor Walfish in partnership with Black Equities. This project aims to enhance the aging population in the Fairfax area while ensuring the continued existence of the synagogue, which has experienced dwindling numbers due to changing demographics. He recalls his experiences attending Shabbat services with his father, Harold Pepper, who, along with many Holocaust survivors, helped shape the congregation.
