The intensified deportation efforts by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) under President Donald Trump have sparked renewed discussions about comprehensive immigration reform. As the agency’s tactics come under scrutiny following significant incidents, including the tragic death of Renee Nicole Good, a 37-year-old mother of three, lawmakers are beginning to explore bipartisan solutions to the ongoing immigration challenges.

The recent surge of ICE agents in cities across the United States has led to considerable economic and social disruptions. Escobar, along with Republican Representative Maria Elvira Salazar, is co-sponsoring the Dignity Act, a bill designed to offer a more balanced approach to immigration reform. This legislation has garnered bipartisan support, with about a dozen co-sponsors from both parties.

The Dignity Act aims to strengthen immigration enforcement while also providing a long-term legal status for most undocumented immigrants without a criminal record. This dual approach is reminiscent of past bipartisan immigration reform efforts, such as those in 2006 and 2013, which ultimately failed to pass. Notably, the Dignity Act would require employers to verify the immigration status of their employees and impose stricter asylum application processes. However, it excludes individuals who entered the U.S. under Biden’s administration, estimated at approximately 3.5 million.

While the bill does not include a pathway to citizenship for most undocumented immigrants, it has received a cautiously positive response from advocacy groups. Vanessa Cardenas, executive director of America’s Voice, acknowledges a shift in the conversation among advocates, noting a growing willingness to discuss legal status short of citizenship.
