Majority of Americans Criticize Trump’s Priorities in New Poll

A recent poll conducted by CNN in collaboration with SSRS reveals that a significant portion of the American public disapproves of President Donald Trump’s focus during his first year back in the White House. The survey indicates that most Americans believe he is prioritizing the wrong issues, particularly regarding the cost of living, which remains a pressing concern for many.

The findings show that 58% of respondents label Trump’s first year as a failure. This negative sentiment poses challenges for the Republican Party as they approach critical midterm elections. The economy emerges as the top issue for voters, with nearly two-thirds identifying it as their primary concern. Despite this, the poll suggests that Trump is struggling to demonstrate effective action in this area.

Economic assessments have remained largely unfavorable over the past two years, with only about 30% of Americans rating current economic conditions positively. The latest data highlights a worrying trend; just over 40% of those surveyed expect the economy to improve in the next year, a sharp decline from 56% just before Trump took office in January 2021.

A majority of 55% of participants believe that Trump’s policies have negatively impacted the economy, while 64% think he has not done enough to alleviate rising costs for everyday goods. Even among Republican supporters, approximately half feel he should be more proactive in addressing these economic challenges.

Public perception of Trump’s priorities has shifted noticeably. Only 36% of participants feel he is focused on the right issues, a decrease from 45% at the start of his term. Moreover, just 33% of Americans believe he genuinely cares about their needs, marking a decline from 40% last March, which represents the lowest approval rating of his presidency.

Critics express concerns about Trump’s perceived self-interest and lack of empathy. One independent voter from Oklahoma noted, “Even if he is doing some good in areas, he comes across very self-seeking and shows a lack of caring about the common good of our citizens.”

Trump’s overall job approval rating currently stands at 39%. His ratings have fluctuated, initially peaking around 48% in February 2021 before declining during his second term. Comparatively, Trump’s political landscape resembles that of his predecessor, Joe Biden, who also faced skepticism regarding economic management.

Despite these challenges, Trump maintains strong support within his base. Approximately 90% of Republicans approve of his performance, with around half expressing strong approval. Support among members of the MAGA movement remains nearly universal. A Republican from Tennessee remarked, “He’s not perfect but he’s actually getting results in what he’s doing.”

Conversely, Trump’s approval among independents has plummeted to just 29%, with virtually no backing from Democrats. Support among Latino voters and individuals under 35 years old has dropped to 30%, a significant decline from earlier in his term.

While Trump previously enjoyed higher approval ratings for his handling of the economy, his current performance across various issues, including immigration and healthcare, reflects a broader dissatisfaction. The poll reveals that public sentiment is increasingly concerned about his use of presidential power.

Approximately 58% of respondents believe Trump has overstepped his authority, a rise from 52% earlier in his term. Concerns extend to his attempts to influence cultural institutions and cut federal programs, with 62% and 57% of respondents expressing disapproval, respectively.

The CNN poll, conducted from January 9-12, 2023, included a random national sample of 1,209 adults, with a margin of error of ±3.1%. As the political landscape evolves, these findings may significantly impact Trump’s ability to navigate the upcoming elections and address the pressing concerns of the American public.
