Neil Gaiman Denies Sexual Assault Allegations, Calls Them Smear Campaign

Renowned author Neil Gaiman has publicly addressed multiple sexual assault allegations against him, categorically denying the claims and describing them as a “smear campaign.” In a detailed statement on his official Facebook page, Gaiman, known for works such as American Gods and The Sandman, labeled the accusations as “completely and simply untrue.”

The allegations first emerged in a July 2024 podcast by Tortoise Media and were later expanded upon in a January 2025 investigation by New York Magazine. Gaiman stated he has “never engaged in nonconsensual sexual activity with anyone. Ever.” Nine women have come forward with accusations, including Scarlett Pavlovich, the former nanny of Gaiman and his ex-wife, musician Amanda Palmer.

In his statement, Gaiman expressed his astonishment at the rapid spread of these allegations. He emphasized that he is a victim of a coordinated effort to undermine his reputation. “I have learned first-hand how effective a smear campaign can be,” he wrote. Gaiman asserted that concrete evidence exists to counter the allegations, claiming, “There are emails, text messages and video evidence that flatly contradict them.”

He criticized certain media outlets for prioritizing sensationalism over factual reporting. Gaiman pointed out that “these allegations, especially the really salacious ones, have been spread and amplified by people who seemed a lot more interested in outrage and getting clicks on headlines rather than whether things had actually happened or not.” He expressed disappointment that journalistic investigations failed to adequately consider the evidence, leading to what he described as an “echo chamber” of reporting.

Despite the controversy surrounding him, Gaiman remains focused on his writing. He stated, “One thing that’s kept me going through all this madness is the conviction that the truth would, eventually, come out.” He also mentioned that he is nearing completion of a new novel, indicating a return to his creative endeavors amidst the turmoil.
