New Year’s Eve Celebrations Kick Off America’s 250th Anniversary

On December 31, 2025, celebrations across the United States will herald the beginning of the nation’s 250th anniversary, or Semiquincentennial. This momentous occasion follows 50 years after the Bicentennial festivities in 1976, which were marked by large gatherings, including the Pottsville Assembly at the Necho Allen Hotel.

In Schuylkill County, plans for the 250th anniversary celebrations are still being finalized. A significant event occurred in September when the county dedicated its Liberty Tree in Tamaqua. This Tulip Poplar seedling, genetically linked to a tree that witnessed the American Revolution, was planted in Liberty Tree Park. During the dedication ceremony, Rev. Dillon Epler, pastor of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Tamaqua, emphasized the importance of remembering the nation’s founders. “We pause to honor the souls of those who came before us, those who fought for freedom in the American Revolution,” he stated. Approximately 100 people attended the event, held on Railroad Street opposite the historic Tamaqua Railroad Station.

America250PA, the organization overseeing the state’s anniversary events, announced that each of Pennsylvania’s 67 counties will receive a Liberty Tree. The official celebration is set for July 4, 2026, coinciding with the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, which was adopted on July 4, 1776. Although the document was signed later, on August 2, 1776, the July date is recognized as the birth of the nation.

As part of the celebrations, the Museum of the American Revolution in Philadelphia will host an exploration of the Declaration of Independence over the President’s Day weekend from February 14 to 16, 2026. This event is part of a broader initiative that also examines the lives of two significant presidents, George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, both vital figures in American history.

America250PA is coordinating various statewide activities, including the “Bells Across PA” program. This initiative allows local artists to create decorated replicas of the Liberty Bell for display across the state. In September, a mobile museum from America250PA visited Orwigsburg during Heritage Day, where visitors signed a mock Liberty Bell and engaged with interactive exhibits, including a history trivia game and a digital storytelling booth.

Orwigsburg has established a committee, led by the Orwigsburg Historical Society, to plan the borough’s 250th anniversary observance. The committee has outlined several events for July 4, 2026, commencing with a “Celebration of Patriotism, Faith and Community Spirit” at St. John’s United Church of Christ at 18:00. As night falls, Market Square will illuminate with luminaria ahead of the Schuylkill County Country Club’s annual fireworks display.

The committee is also encouraging local residents to participate in the National Bell Ringing at 14:00 on July 4. This tradition, established by U.S. Congressional Resolution No. 25 in 1963, calls for bells across America to ring 13 times at this hour in honor of the original 13 colonies’ adoption of the Declaration of Independence. As part of Orwigsburg’s program, Mayor Barry Berger is expected to read the Declaration of Independence, recalling the historical moment when Col. John Nixon first read the document on July 8, 1776, in front of the Pennsylvania State House, now known as Independence Hall in Philadelphia.

The American Revolution, which began with the battles of Lexington and Concord on April 19, 1775, continued for eight years, concluding with the signing of the Treaty of Paris on September 3, 1783. This treaty formally recognized the United States as an independent nation, following the pivotal victory of the Continental Army at the Battle of Yorktown in October 1781.

As the nation prepares for its 250th anniversary, communities like Schuylkill County and Orwigsburg are gearing up to celebrate a significant chapter in American history, one that echoes through generations.
