Remembering Howard Lee Nunes: A Legacy of Music and Service

Howard Lee Nunes, a beloved figure in Santa Cruz, California, passed away on December 20, 2025, at the age of 97. Born on June 23, 1928, in Soquel, he dedicated his life to music, family, and his faith as a member of the Jehovah’s Witnesses.

Nunes was a lifelong resident of Santa Cruz, where he was known for his integrity and sense of humor. He is survived by his wife of over 70 years, Alberta B. Nunes, along with their two daughters, Terri D. Ritchie and Liann M. Reyes, both of whom cherish the memories they created together. Nunes also leaves behind six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, who will remember him fondly.

A proud graduate of Santa Cruz High School, Class of 1946, Nunes was an enthusiastic member of the school band, excelling as a trombonist. Music was a lifelong passion for him, as he delighted in singing and playing in various bands. He also enjoyed tinkering with his piano, sharing his love for music with those around him.

Nunes dedicated much of his life to his faith, serving as an elder in his local Jehovah’s Witnesses congregation. He was deeply involved in ministry work, performing numerous wedding ceremonies and burial services, which left a lasting impact on the community. His commitment to his faith and service exemplified his character.

Professionally, Nunes had a successful career in the tile business, starting in 1948 as a bookkeeper before becoming an estimator. He eventually founded his own company, Harbor Tile. His expertise and willingness to mentor others in the trade made him a respected figure in the industry.

A memorial service honoring Nunes will take place on January 24, 2026, at 2:00 PM at the Kingdom Hall located at 960 Brommer St., Santa Cruz, CA.
