Rep. Valerie Foushee Claims Narrow Victory in Primary Election

Representative Valerie Foushee has declared victory in a closely contested primary election held on March 5, 2024. With the final vote count still pending, Foushee received approximately 49.2% of the ballots cast, while her progressive challenger, Nida Allam, garnered around 48.2%. As the results are within a narrow margin, a recount is likely, as state law allows for one when the difference is under 1%.

Polling stations in North Carolina closed at 19:30, with results beginning to surface around 20:30. By 00:45 the following day, nearly 99% of the votes had been tallied. Foushee expressed her gratitude in a statement, saying she is “deeply humbled to have the opportunity to represent this district for another term.”

The primary has been marked by intense campaigning and significant external funding, particularly from groups critical of Foushee’s past pro-Israel stances. Despite this, the influx of support from progressive factions, including an anti-Israel sentiment, did not seem to shift the outcome decisively in Allam’s favor.
