In her passionate appeal, Swanker-Gibson questions the validity of fundamental American principles stated in the Declaration of Independence, such as the rights to “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” She highlights the disparity in how these rights are perceived and afforded to different demographics, particularly emphasizing that wealth and race often dictate one’s status in society.
