Rose Parade Float Pays Tribute to Wildfire Victims, Sparks Calls for Investigation

The 2026 Rose Parade featured a float that not only honored victims and survivors of California wildfires but also became a platform for calls for accountability. The “Rising Together” float, commissioned by the California Community Foundation and the Black Freedom Fund, was adorned with 31 sunflowers representing the lives lost in both the Eaton and Palisades fires.

The float was a tribute to the communities of Altadena, Pasadena, Pacific Palisades, and Malibu. It showcased a towering phoenix, symbolizing renewal, alongside California native plants and visual elements depicting the San Gabriel Mountains and coastal landscapes. Survivors of the fires, along with representatives from local nonprofit organizations, rode on the float and walked alongside it during the parade on January 1, 2026.

Sign Sparks Controversy

During the parade, riders briefly displayed a sign reading, “AG Bonta Altadena Demands an Investigation.” The local organization Altadena Rising shared a photo of the sign on social media, asserting that Los Angeles County officials must be held accountable for their alleged inaction during the Eaton fire, which they claim contributed significantly to the devastation experienced in Altadena. Their post emphasized the urgency of the demand for an investigation: “The Altadena float carries more than flowers this year; it carries our demand for an investigation into the fire AG Bonta, we need answers.”

While the two nonprofit organizations did not disavow the message completely, they clarified that the sign was not an official part of the float. In a statement, they expressed their solidarity with the community, acknowledging the need for accountability and justice. “The California Community Foundation and the Black Freedom Fund stand with the community and support the urgency of calls for accountability and justice,” they said. “The signage displayed was not part of the float.” They reaffirmed that the float’s purpose was to honor the “courage and resilience of wildfire survivors” and to remember those whose lives were irreversibly changed by the fires.

Acknowledging Loss and Recovery

The float received recognition from parade judges, earning the Fantasy Award for “most outstanding display of fantasy and imagination.” This accolade highlights the creative effort put into commemorating the victims and survivors while also drawing attention to the broader issues surrounding fire management and community support.
