Sierra Madre Removes Controversial Audio from Rose Parade Float

The Sierra Madre Rose Float Association has decided to remove audio from its entry for the upcoming January 1, 2026, Rose Parade following significant backlash over its content. The float, titled “Pancake Breakfast,” features a large fire truck modeled after Sierra Madre’s Fire Engine #41, with a firefighter spraying syrup onto a stack of pancakes. Critics have described the audio, which includes a firefighter calling for more syrup, as “insensitive,” prompting the association to act.

In a statement, the Sierra Madre Float Association clarified that the intention behind the float was never to mock the work of firefighters but to celebrate their teamwork in a light-hearted manner. The Board of Directors emphasized their goal of honoring local firefighters and promoting community spirit through their design. The float’s concept summary described it as a whimsical representation of the camaraderie within the Fire Department, aiming to turn a pancake breakfast into an enjoyable community event.

After receiving widespread criticism, the association announced, “Because the intent of this float is to bring joy and not distress, we have decided to remove the dialogue and music portion of the soundtrack.” This decision came after days of negative feedback, with over 300 emails expressing concerns about the float’s audio.

Many volunteers, including float Volunteer Coordinator Hanna Jungbauer, suggested that the backlash stemmed from misunderstandings regarding the float’s audio. She noted that the dialogue did not reference fire or burning but solely focused on the playful concept of needing more syrup. Construction of Sierra Madre’s float began in March, with the design winning a group vote in January.

The float holds a special significance for the community, according to builders like Kurt Kulhavy, who stated that it serves as a vital representation of Sierra Madre during the Rose Parade. He recounted how the local Fire Department recently resumed their pancake breakfasts, showcasing the float at these events to foster community engagement.

The Rose Parade comes at a time when Sierra Madre has been grappling with the aftermath of the Eaton and Palisades fires, which resulted in the destruction of thousands of structures and claimed 31 lives. Many residents are still reeling from the impact of these disasters, which included criticisms of inadequate water supply and delayed evacuation alerts.

Community organizer Shawna Dawson pointed out that the float’s audio seemed “tone deaf” given the context of recent events. She remarked, “I spoke on behalf of the hundreds of people in our group who had shared their hurt and upset over the float.” Some social media comments even suggested a boycott of Sierra Madre businesses until the issue was addressed, leading to heightened tensions and the presence of police at the float’s warehouse.

Jungbauer expressed empathy towards the Altadena community, recalling her own involvement in relief efforts following the fires. She highlighted that many volunteers from Altadena participated in the float’s creation, underscoring a shared desire for community healing.

Lead Florist Anne McKenzie echoed these sentiments, stating, “We want to be empathetic and sympathetic to our neighbors.” She indicated that several past princesses and volunteers from Sierra Madre also suffered losses due to the fires, reinforcing the community’s commitment to unity and support.

The Tournament of Roses Association, which oversees the parade, acknowledged Sierra Madre’s role among various towns contributing self-built floats. CEO David Eads remarked, “The Rose Parade is made possible by communities across the region who proudly share their creativity, traditions, and volunteer spirit.” He affirmed the importance of local pride and dedication in making the event a cherished tradition.
