Trump Orders U.S. Strikes on ISIS in Nigeria Amid Christian Persecution
Former President Donald Trump has announced military strikes against ISIS forces in Nigeria, citing the ongoing persecution of Christians as the primary motivation. The strikes were confirmed by U.S. Africa Command and the Nigerian government, marking a significant escalation in U.S. involvement in the region. Details surrounding the operations remain sparse, but the Defense Department released a video indicating the nature of the strikes.
On Thursday, Trump stated that the U.S. launched “powerful and deadly” strikes against ISIS in northwest Nigeria. He expressed his deep concern over what he characterized as a “vicious” campaign against Christians, claiming that such violence had reached unprecedented levels. In a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump declared, “Tonight, at my direction as Commander in Chief, the United States launched a powerful and deadly strike against ISIS Terrorist Scum… who have been targeting and viciously killing, primarily, innocent Christians.”
While the exact outcomes of the strikes remain unclear, U.S. Africa Command reported that its initial assessment indicated multiple ISIS terrorists were killed during the operations. The Defense Secretary, Pete Hegseth, reiterated Trump’s warning, emphasizing the need to halt the killing of innocent Christians in Nigeria. He expressed gratitude for the support and cooperation received from the Nigerian government.
The Nigerian foreign ministry acknowledged the U.S. strikes, noting that it received prior notice. The ministry emphasized its ongoing collaboration with international partners, including the United States, to combat the persistent threat of terrorism. It stated, “Terrorist violence in any form, whether directed at Christians, Muslims or other communities, remains an affront to Nigeria’s values and to international peace and security.”
In a communication with local media, Nigerian Foreign Minister Yusuf Tuggar revealed that Nigeria had provided intelligence to the U.S. prior to the strikes. Tuggar indicated that he had engaged in detailed discussions with Secretary of State Marco Rubio before and after the operations. When questioned about the potential for further strikes, Tuggar confirmed that ongoing collaboration with the U.S. and other nations was in progress.
The announcement of these military actions comes after Trump had previously criticized Nigeria’s government for not doing enough to protect Christians from violence. In early November, he instructed the Pentagon to prepare for possible action in Nigeria, warning that any military response would be “fast, vicious, and sweet,” mirroring the tactics used by extremist groups.
In response to Trump’s claims, the Nigerian government has firmly rejected the notion that it is failing to safeguard its Christian population. Analysts have pointed out that while Christians are indeed targeted, the majority of victims of violence in Nigeria are Muslims. Recent incidents of violence, including an explosion at a mosque in Maiduguri that resulted in five fatalities, highlight the complex security situation in the country.
Nigeria was designated as a “country of particular concern” by the U.S. in 2020, citing systematic violations of religious freedom. This designation was lifted in 2023, seen by many as a move to strengthen diplomatic relations between the two nations. The State Department typically issues its annual report on international religious freedom in the spring, which may include various designations, though the specifics remain to be confirmed.
As the situation continues to evolve, the international community will be closely watching how these military actions impact the security landscape in Nigeria and the broader region. The U.S. commitment to addressing the threats posed by ISIS in Nigeria reflects ongoing concerns over religious persecution and the need for collaborative efforts to combat terrorism.
