Trump Reports ‘Productive’ Call With Putin Ahead of Meeting
President Donald Trump expressed optimism following a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin, announcing plans for an upcoming in-person meeting. The leaders agreed to convene next week in Budapest, Hungary, in an effort to address the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Trump described the conversation as “very productive” in a post on Truth Social.
The anticipated meeting marks a significant step in diplomatic discussions aimed at ending hostilities between Russia and Ukraine. Trump is scheduled to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on March 15, 2024, at the White House to discuss his recent conversation with Putin and other pertinent matters.
Trump revealed that he and Putin agreed on the necessity of a meeting involving their high-level advisors, which is set to take place next week. The exact location for this preliminary discussion has yet to be determined, but the U.S. delegation will include Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
In his social media update, Trump emphasized the urgency of concluding what he described as an “inglorious war” between Russia and Ukraine. He stated, “I believe great progress was made with today’s telephone conversation.” The upcoming summit follows a previous meeting between the two leaders in Alaska in August 2023, which did not yield substantial advancements towards peace.
In addition to addressing the conflict in Ukraine, Putin acknowledged Trump’s efforts in achieving peace in the Middle East. Trump recounted that Putin congratulated him and the United States on what he referred to as a “Great Accomplishment of Peace in the Middle East,” a goal that has been sought after for centuries. Trump noted, “I actually believe that the success in the Middle East will help in our negotiation in attaining an end to the war with Russia/Ukraine.”
The developments from Trump’s call with Putin indicate a renewed commitment to dialogue between the two nations, and the upcoming meetings may provide a platform for deeper negotiations regarding the complex geopolitical landscape surrounding the Ukraine conflict. As this story unfolds, the global community watches closely for any signs of progress toward lasting peace in the region.
