Ukrainian Forces Advance Near Kupyansk, Challenging Russian Control
Ukrainian forces have intensified their offensive operations around the city of Kupyansk in Kharkiv Oblast, as confirmed by a recent report from the Institute for the Study of War. This action marks a significant development in the ongoing conflict, with Ukrainian soldiers reportedly gaining full control of the Yuvileinyi neighborhood in southwestern Kupyansk. According to Yurii Butusov, a serviceman with the Khartii Brigade, the loss of this area is pivotal for Russian forces, hindering their ability to maintain positions in the region.
Analysts have noted that Russian sabotage groups remain active in the northern and western sections of Kupyansk. A chief of staff from a Ukrainian drone battalion indicated that attempts by Russian troops to infiltrate the city continue, primarily through foot movements. Reports from Russian war correspondents corroborate the advances made by Ukrainian forces, highlighting “heavy fighting” in areas such as Myrove and Radkivka. Notably, one correspondent acknowledged that Russian forces lost control of Radkivka along with two defensive positions to the south and east of the village.
Ukrainian Defense Forces initiated a counteroffensive in September, following a period where Russian troops had made significant gains toward Kupyansk. During the summer months, Russian military operations intensified in the area, with troops establishing a threatening presence by early August. The Russian command had characterized the entry of their units into Kupyansk as a “significant advance,” which allowed them to fortify their positions.
By mid-September, the situation had become critical for Ukrainian forces, as Russian troops had effectively entrenched themselves within the city. However, Butusov reported that Ukrainian forces successfully liberated Tyshchenkivka by September 24, Kindrashivka by October 9, and Radkivka by October 11. These victories enabled Ukrainian fighters to breach Russian defenses in the region.
On October 21, 2023, it was reported that Ukrainian forces reached the right bank of the Oskil River, successfully severing Russian lines of communication to Kupyansk. This strategic maneuver has raised the stakes, as Russian forces have developed a high-risk UAV strike zone in the direction of Kupyansk. Butusov emphasized that the tactical advantages gained by Ukrainian forces have been instrumental in their counterattacks.
The ongoing counteroffensive demonstrates that Ukrainian forces are achieving notable tactical successes, particularly in areas where Russian forces appear overstretched and vulnerable. As the conflict continues to evolve, the dynamics of control in and around Kupyansk remain pivotal to both sides.
