US Launches Major Strikes Against Iran Amid Rising Tensions

The United States has initiated significant military operations against Iran, employing a variety of weapons including missiles and drones. This escalation follows the breakdown of diplomatic efforts aimed at curbing Iran’s nuclear capabilities. The strikes, which began on Saturday, involved a coordinated effort alongside Israeli forces and targeted Iranian positions across the region.

US warships launched Tomahawk cruise missiles while ground forces utilized the High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS). In addition to these, US forces deployed drones and undisclosed standoff weapons, executing strikes from land, sea, and air assets in a series of joint operations. A US official, who requested to remain anonymous, confirmed these details to Business Insider.

In response to the US attacks, Iran retaliated by firing multiple waves of missiles at various targets throughout the Middle East. This included significant American military bases located in Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates. The official stated that the US military successfully intercepted an unspecified number of these missiles using advanced air defense systems, including the MIM-104 Patriot and the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) systems. No critical damage or American casualties have been reported as a result of the Iranian strikes.

Iran’s missile attacks reached Bahrain, where a major US Navy base faced a direct assault. Additional reports indicate that other nations in the region, notably Qatar, have also confirmed their involvement in intercepting Iranian missiles aimed at US forces. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced that British aircraft are participating in coordinated defensive operations in response to the escalating conflict.

An official from Israel noted that “a few dozen” Iranian missiles have been launched during this period, indicating the intensity of the exchanges. President Donald Trump declared the onset of “major combat operations” in Iran following the collapse of negotiations aimed at limiting Tehran’s military advancements. This announcement coincided with Israel’s claim of having conducted a “preemptive” strike against Iranian targets.

This military action represents the second instance within less than a year where the US has engaged directly with Iran, following previous strikes in June 2025 that targeted Iranian nuclear facilities as part of Operation Midnight Hammer.

In recent weeks, the US has increased its military presence in the Middle East and the Eastern Mediterranean Sea, deploying over a dozen warships, including two aircraft carriers, along with hundreds of fighter jets and support aircraft. The UK, while maintaining military assets in the region, has not participated in offensive operations.

As the situation continues to develop, the implications of these military actions extend beyond immediate regional impacts, potentially affecting international relations and security dynamics in the Middle East. The ongoing exchanges between US and Iranian forces highlight the fragile state of peace in the region and the challenges facing diplomatic efforts.
