Boston Celtics Sign John Tonje to Two-Way Contract
The Boston Celtics have officially signed rookie wing John Tonje to a two-way contract, ensuring his continued presence with the team. This decision comes after Tonje completed a ten-day contract with the Celtics, allowing him to transition into a more extended role. Previously acquired from the Utah Jazz, Tonje’s signing reflects Boston’s strategy as they navigate roster changes and salary management.
As the Celtics work through their roster adjustments, they also face the expiration of Dalano Banton‘s ten-day contract, which concluded on March 1, 2024. This development leaves the team with three available standard roster spots. The Celtics are expected to maintain fewer than 14 players under standard contracts for a maximum of 14 days before addressing at least two of these vacancies.
The decision to keep Tonje and the management of the roster are closely tied to the team’s financial strategies. The Celtics aim to finish the season below the luxury tax line. Successfully achieving this goal will position Boston to reset the luxury tax repeater penalties. Staying out of the tax for another season is crucial for the Celtics to fully reset the luxury tax repeater clock, allowing for greater flexibility in future roster decisions.
Tonje’s addition to the roster could provide the Celtics with valuable depth as they continue their campaign. With the season progressing, the team’s management will look to optimize their lineup and maintain a competitive edge, all while adhering to financial constraints. As the Celtics navigate this critical period, fans will be eager to see how these changes impact their playoff aspirations.
