Dams Heighten Disease Risk in Brown Trout, Study Reveals Impact
A recent study published in Communications Biology highlights an alarming environmental consequence of man-made dams on rivers and streams. Researchers from the Estonian University of Life Sciences and the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences discovered that small river impoundments lead to significantly elevated water temperatures. This increase adversely affects ecosystem health, particularly for the brown trout (Salmo trutta), a vital indicator species.
The research focused on the relationship between dam-induced temperature changes and the spread of Proliferative Kidney Disease (PKD), a serious disease impacting fish populations. By examining various river systems, the study revealed that these temperature rises enhance the pathogenic effects of PKD, posing a substantial risk to brown trout and potentially other aquatic species.
In their findings, the researchers emphasized that the construction of small dams not only alters river hydrology but also creates conditions conducive to the proliferation of pathogens.
