Research conducted by scientists at the Motu Economic and Public Policy Research in New Zealand and the Research Institute of Economy in Japan reveals that language barriers significantly slow down the international dissemination of knowledge, particularly in the field of technology. The study, published in the journal Nature Human Behavior on February 22, 2026, highlights how delays in translating patents can hinder global innovation.

According to the findings, language barriers accounted for nearly 50% of the delay experienced in the diffusion of knowledge from Japan to the United States. Authors Kyle Higham and Sadao Nagaoka explained, “Language barriers and translation costs are persistent obstacles to communication and have particularly pronounced economic impacts in technical domains.” They provided causal evidence of these effects by analyzing a change in U.S. patent policy that expedited the disclosure of Japanese technical knowledge in English.

Research Methodology and Key Findings

The researchers examined a sample of 2,770 patent citations made by U.S.-based inventors referencing Japanese inventions. They identified a reform in U.S. patent policy that reduced the time required to translate and disclose Japanese patents. This enabled them to compare the citation timelines of Japanese inventions before and after the policy change.

One significant finding was that smaller U.S. firms, which lacked in-house translation resources, gained the most from the earlier availability of translated patents. The study revealed that Japanese inventions of higher quality were cited more quickly in English documents, underscoring the challenges of translating high-impact inventions effectively. Higham and Nagaoka stated, “This acceleration is significant only for firms with limited ability to translate and is more pronounced for the diffusion of high-quality inventions.”

The implications of this research highlight the crucial role of prompt patent translation in fostering global innovation. For smaller companies, access to translated documents is vital, as they often do not have the resources to manage translations independently.

Moving forward, the study suggests that governments may need to reassess their patent diffusion policies to enhance international collaboration and innovation. Further research could expand upon these findings by exploring the translation of patents in other languages and regions, thereby broadening the understanding of language’s role in technological advancement.
