SpaceX Crew-12 Astronauts Dock with ISS on Valentine’s Day

SpaceX’s Crew-12 mission successfully docked with the International Space Station (ISS) on February 14, 2024, at approximately 3:15 p.m. EST (2015 GMT). This docking concluded a 36-hour journey for the astronauts aboard the Crew Dragon capsule, named “Freedom.”

The mission featured a live broadcast that began at 1:15 p.m. EST (1815 GMT), allowing space enthusiasts to witness the historic rendezvous. Following the docking procedure, NASA confirmed that the crew would transition out of their spacesuits and prepare for cargo offloading, with a hatch opening scheduled around 5:00 p.m. EST (2200 GMT).

Mission Details and Crew Composition

The Crew-12 mission launched from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida on February 13, 2024. The crew includes NASA’s Jessica Meir as the mission commander, Jack Hathaway as the pilot, Sophie Adenot of the European Space Agency, and Andrey Fedyaev representing the Russian space agency, Roscosmos. This mission marks the first spaceflight for both Hathaway and Adenot, while Meir and Fedyaev are returning for their second missions.

Fedyaev was a late addition to the Crew-12 team, replacing Oleg Artemyev, who was removed for allegedly violating the U.S. law known as ITAR (International Traffic in Arms Regulations).

The Crew-12 astronauts are expected to stay aboard the ISS until October, extending their stay beyond the standard six-month rotation. They will collaborate with three other astronauts currently on the ISS: NASA’s Chris Williams and cosmonauts Sergey Kud-Sverchkov and Sergei Mikaev.

Impact of Crew Changes on the ISS

The ISS has been operating with a reduced crew since January 15, 2024, when the Crew-11 mission returned to Earth. This early departure was necessitated by a medical issue affecting one of its astronauts, marking the first medical evacuation in the history of the ISS, which has continuously hosted crew members since November 2000. The typical crew size for the ISS has been seven since 2020, an increase from the original baseline of three.

As the Crew-12 astronauts integrate into their new environment, they will not only continue ongoing scientific research but also be involved in the daily operations of the ISS. Their arrival is a crucial step in maintaining the station’s functionality and ensuring the continuation of international collaboration in space exploration.
