Sharks Take Point in Overtime Loss to Blues at SAP Center
In a closely contested game, the San Jose Sharks secured a point despite a 3-2 overtime loss to the St. Louis Blues on March 1, 2024, at the SAP Center. The decisive moment came when Robert Thomas scored just 54 seconds into overtime, sealing the victory for the Blues in front of a sellout crowd of 17,435 fans.
The Sharks found themselves trailing by a goal in the third period before Kiefer Sherwood equalized with his 19th goal of the season, scoring with 6:34 remaining in regulation. Earlier, Macklin Celebrini had tied the game at 1-1 with his 31st goal of the season in the second period.
Challenges for the Sharks
Throughout the match, the Sharks struggled with puck management, leading to numerous giveaways. They recorded a total of 19 giveaways, with rookie defenseman Sam Dickinson contributing six and Will Smith adding five. Goalie Alex Nedeljkovic, who recently signed a two-year, $6 million contract extension, made 12 saves during the game but faced seven high-danger scoring chances in the first two periods alone.
The Blues had an impressive performance from their goaltender Jordan Binnington, who stopped 23 shots. Binnington entered the game with a strong record against the Sharks, boasting an 8-2-1 record and a .910 save percentage in their past encounters. His performance proved crucial as the Sharks managed only 17 shots on goal throughout the match.
Looking Ahead
Despite the loss, Sharks general manager Mike Grier expressed confidence in the team’s performance, particularly highlighting their recent three-game win streak. Grier opted not to trade many of his pending unrestricted free agents at the NHL trade deadline, believing this group deserved a chance to compete for a playoff spot.
The Sharks are currently three points behind the Seattle Kraken for the second wild card spot in the Western Conference and four points back of the Edmonton Oilers for third place in the Pacific Division. The Oilers suffered a defeat against the Carolina Hurricanes, losing 6-3 on the same night. Grier’s decision to keep the team intact reflects a commitment to building momentum as they push for a playoff berth, a goal they have not achieved since 2019.
As the season progresses, the Sharks will need to address their inconsistencies and improve their puck management to enhance their chances of making a significant playoff run. The upcoming games will be critical for determining the team’s trajectory as they strive to return to postseason play.
