Will Fetterman Endorse Shapiro Ahead of Critical Election?
The political landscape in Pennsylvania is currently marked by uncertainty as questions arise about whether Senator John Fetterman will endorse Governor Josh Shapiro during Shapiro’s ongoing re-election campaign. With the 2026 gubernatorial race gaining momentum, Fetterman’s support could play a significant role in shaping party unity, especially as the Democratic Party navigates internal tensions.
Current Tensions Between Fetterman and Shapiro
The relationship between Fetterman and Shapiro has been strained, particularly following past disagreements over the role of the state Board of Pardons, which Fetterman previously led as lieutenant governor. In his memoir, Unfettered, Fetterman expresses frustration with Shapiro, who, as attorney general, he perceived as overly cautious regarding political ramifications when making decisions about commutations and pardons. This discord has only intensified since both men took on their current roles: Shapiro as governor and Fetterman as senator.
In the summer of 2024, Fetterman openly criticized Shapiro during discussions surrounding then-Vice President Kamala Harris‘s potential running mates. Now, as a prominent figure in the Senate, Fetterman has adopted a more moderate stance, often aligning with Republican viewpoints on issues such as war powers and relations with Israel. This shift complicates Shapiro’s campaign, as he prefers a more structured and disciplined approach to governance.
Implications for the Democratic Party
If Fetterman chooses to remain neutral during Shapiro’s campaign, it could benefit the Republican Party, particularly as they have rallied around their gubernatorial candidate, Stacy Garrity, the state treasurer. In contrast, the Pennsylvania Democratic Party faces the challenge of uniting around two leaders who have publicly expressed their differences. This division could pose a challenge for Eugene DePasquale, the newly appointed state Democratic Party chair, as he attempts to foster camaraderie among party members.
Moreover, Fetterman’s support for Israel has drawn criticism from certain factions within the Democratic Party, while Shapiro, who shares similar views, appears to maintain favor among voters. When asked recently about endorsing Fetterman’s potential 2028 re-election, Shapiro’s response highlighted their strained dynamics, suggesting that he is not eager to navigate this politically charged relationship further.
As speculation mounts regarding Fetterman’s future, including a potential primary challenge from more progressive candidates or even a run as an independent, his endorsement of Shapiro could serve as a strategic move to maintain party loyalty. This “Maverick Insurance” would allow Fetterman to align himself with Shapiro while still appealing to his base, which feels disillusioned by his recent actions.
Looking ahead, questions remain about whether Fetterman will actively support Shapiro’s campaign or if he will choose to distance himself. The prospect of a joint campaign event or bus tour through rural Pennsylvania raises further questions about their collaboration. With the political stakes high, both Fetterman and Shapiro must navigate a complex landscape, where their actions will undoubtedly impact the broader Democratic agenda in Pennsylvania.
As the political scene continues to evolve, the relationship between these two prominent figures will be closely monitored. Their interactions may determine not only their individual futures but also the overall strength of the Democratic Party in a state that is pivotal for national elections.
