URGENT UPDATE: Cando, North Dakota, has lost its last remaining Civil War veteran, Lewis V. Hackett, who passed away on March 12, 1926, at the age of 81. His death marks a poignant moment in history for the community, signaling the end of an era as the last link to the Civil War fades away.

Funeral services for Mr. Hackett were held at the local Methodist church, officiated by Rev. A. E. Hooke. The community gathered to pay their respects to a man who dedicated his life to service and family. Mr. Hackett had battled illness for several months before his passing, leaving behind a legacy that will not be forgotten.

Born in Driden Springs, New York, in 1845, Hackett enlisted in Company M, First Regiment of Ohio Heavy Artillery during the Civil War in 1863. He served with honor until his discharge in 1865. After marrying Nora States, he became a father to five children, although three have since passed. He is survived by two children: L. B. Hackett from Sarles and Mrs. Hazel Johnstone from Hansboro.

Mr. Hackett moved to the Dakota territory in 1884, where he homesteaded near Aneta, in Nelson County. He lived on a farm for many years before retiring to Cando about a decade ago. His life story resonates with the history of a nation, and his passing leaves a significant void in the community.
