Dominican Republic Exits WBC Amid Controversial Call, Team USA Advances
UPDATE: In an agonizing turn of events, the Dominican Republic’s hopes for the World Baseball Classic (WBC) were dashed after a controversial call led to a 2-1 loss against Team USA on March 19, 2023. Despite the heartbreak, players emerged from the clubhouse at LoanDepot Park with smiles and music, showcasing their pride in the tournament.
The pivotal moment came when home-plate umpire Cory Blaser called a full-count slider from U.S. closer Mason Miller a strike against D.R. shortstop Geraldo Perdomo, despite it being clearly below the strike zone. This call ended the game and sent Team USA to the finals. “I knew 100% it was a ball,” Perdomo told ESPN, expressing the frustration felt by the entire team.
Superstar Juan Soto reflected on the broader impact of their performance, stating, “We showed the world who’s the best team in baseball.” His comments underscore the tournament’s significance to the Dominican players, who see it as a matter of national pride.
The match, watched by a crowd of 36,337 fans, saw the Dominican team break the WBC record for home runs in a single tournament, emphasizing their talent and spirit. However, the sour ending has left fans and players alike questioning the officiating. The automated ball-strike challenge system, which is set to debut in Major League Baseball this season, was not utilized in the WBC, further exacerbating the situation.
Dominican Republic general manager Nelson Cruz acknowledged the disappointment but remained hopeful for the future. “You lost by inches. We’ll have ABS in a few years, so hopefully next time we can challenge plays like that,” he told ESPN.
As the dust settles, focus now shifts to the upcoming finals where Team USA will face the winner of the Italy vs. Venezuela semifinal on Monday at 8 p.m. ET. The next WBC has yet to be scheduled, but the excitement generated this year has captivated baseball fans worldwide and may pave the way for MLB players to participate in the upcoming 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
The emotional toll of this loss is profound for a team that has captivated audiences and showcased the best of international baseball. The Dominican Republic’s journey in the tournament may have ended, but their resilience and determination continue to resonate with fans globally.
Stay tuned for more updates as the WBC finals approach.
