Explosive Devices Thrown at NYC Mayor’s Home, Suspects Arrested
UPDATE: Two suspects have been arrested following a shocking incident involving explosive devices thrown outside the home of Democratic New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani during a counter-protest on March 8, 2026. Authorities confirm that the incident is being investigated as an act of terrorism linked to ISIS, despite some media outlets labeling it an “anti-Islam” protest.
The chaos erupted around 2:00 PM when individuals identified as Emir Balat and Ibrahim Kayumi allegedly threw improvised explosive devices (IEDs) at demonstrators outside Gracie Mansion, the mayor’s residence. Footage from the scene shows Balat reportedly yelling “Allahu Akbar” just before throwing one of the devices.
City officials, including New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch, confirmed that the homemade bomb contained triacetone triperoxide (TATP), a substance linked to previous ISIS terror attacks. The incident has raised serious concerns about public safety and the ongoing rise of extremist violence.
Several media reports, including those from NBC News and NPR, have connected the bombing to a right-wing protest organized by activist Jake Lang. However, authorities have clarified that the counter-protest, which featured over 100 participants, was in response to Lang’s demonstration against Islam, with Islamic counter-protesters present at the scene.
Mamdani addressed the media on Monday, stating that the incident reflects a larger issue of “white supremacy” and “anti-Muslim bigotry.” He emphasized the urgent need for community solidarity against such acts of violence.
The investigation is ongoing, with police intensifying efforts to determine the full extent of the threat posed by these extremist actions. Community leaders are calling for unity and vigilance in the face of rising tensions.
As this story develops, officials are urging residents to report any suspicious activities. The situation remains fluid, and further updates will follow as authorities continue their investigation into this alarming incident.
