BREAKING NEWS: An extraordinary achievement unfolded as Jon W. Ford, an eighth-grader from Pacific Union School, clinched victory at the Paulette Gilliam Humboldt County Spelling Bee on March 5. His winning word, effraction, marked his triumph and earned him a coveted trip to the prestigious Scripps National Spelling Bee, taking place May 26-28 in Washington, D.C.

Over a riveting competition held at the Sequoia Conference Center, twelve of the county’s brightest young spellers showcased their talents. Ford emerged as the champion after a gripping five rounds, impressing both the audience and judges alike. “Watching these students spell words most adults wouldn’t even attempt was both impressive and a little humbling,” stated Michael Davies-Hughes, Humboldt County Superintendent of Schools.

The stakes are high as Ford prepares to represent his school and county on a national stage, competing for a top prize of $40,000. His principal, Mathew Bigham, expressed immense pride in Ford’s accomplishment: “Jon’s hard work and commitment have earned him a well-deserved spot at the Scripps National Spelling Bee. We couldn’t be more excited to watch him compete!”

In a display of remarkable talent, Cayana Kohndrow from Cuddeback School secured second place, while Michael Glines, a fifth-grader at Ferndale Elementary School, took home third.

The Humboldt County Office of Education extends heartfelt thanks to the dedicated volunteers who made this event possible, including Spelling Bee Coordinator Nanette Voss and the judges: Alexa Blania, Mauro Staiano, Kristin Sobilo, and Lily Herlihy. Additionally, Coast Central Credit Union is recognized for sponsoring the event and providing a travel scholarship for Ford and his family.

As anticipation builds for the national competition, the community rallies behind Jon W. Ford, celebrating not only his success but the spirit of determination and excellence displayed by all participants in the Bee. Stay tuned for updates as Ford embarks on this exciting journey!
