Mountain View Captures CCS D-I Title with Stoppage Time Penalty

UPDATE: In a thrilling finish, the Mountain View Spartans clinched the CCS Division I championship with a dramatic penalty kick by Cyrus Shafie in the final moments of extra time, securing a 2-1 victory over the top-seeded Alvarez Eagles on July 15, 2023, in Santa Clara.

With just moments remaining in the 100th minute, Shafie, who had already showcased his talent with a hat trick in the semifinals, drew a crucial penalty just inside the 18-yard box. Calm and collected, he converted the penalty, sending the ball past Alvarez’s goalkeeper, and giving Mountain View a lead they would not relinquish. The final whistle soon followed, marking Mountain View’s first D-I title in three years.

“I knew the clock had stopped. It was two minutes,” Shafie said, reflecting on the pressure of the moment. “Anything I’m looking for, it’s a goal or foul. And I saw the kid, he slid in. I decided not to touch the ball, so he hit me, and it worked out perfectly.”

Mountain View, seeded No. 7 entering the tournament, faced a formidable Alvarez team that boasted a record of 22-1. Earlier in the match, the Spartans took the lead in the 5th minute when Nicholas Garzino scored from a corner kick delivered by Shafie. However, Alvarez responded quickly with an equalizer from Omar Lopez in the 10th minute, setting the stage for a hard-fought battle.

Both teams exchanged chances, but neither could find the back of the net until Shafie’s decisive moment. The Spartans’ goalkeeper, Aiden Tassa, played a pivotal role in preserving the tie, making a spectacular save in the 94th minute that allowed Mountain View to pursue a winning goal without fear of conceding.

“This wasn’t just a final for us; it was a revenge game,” Shafie emphasized. “We wanted to win it so bad, because they’re the team that took it away from us last year.”

Coach Jim McGuirk, who has led Mountain View for 38 years, praised Shafie’s confidence and skill, stating, “You want that guy who’s confident, and I haven’t had a player more confident than Cyrus probably ever.”

As Mountain View celebrates this significant victory, fans and family members rejoiced in the stands, marking a triumphant conclusion to their season. Shafie expressed his joy, saying, “I still feel like I’m dreaming. It feels amazing. There’s no feeling like that.”
