Fans of the animated series X-Men ’97 can look forward to a new comic series that offers clues about the eagerly anticipated second season. Marvel Comics recently announced a prelude comic titled X-Men ’97: Season Two, which will bridge the gap between the first season and what fans can expect from the upcoming episodes.

The prelude, crafted by writer Steve Foxe and artist Salva Espin, picks up immediately where the first season left off. Marvel’s announcement hints at a storyline that explores the challenges faced by the X-Men in a world that continues to “hunt and hate mutantkind.” The comic promises to follow the characters left behind, raising questions about their survival and the new circumstances they face.

Marvel’s promotional materials tease a significant expansion of the X-Men universe, stating that the comic will introduce “major new characters — and teams — joining the cast.” This suggests that fans may see new mutants or even additional members of the New Mutants team in the unfolding narrative. Foxe acknowledged the cliffhanger at the end of season one, emphasizing that the prequel will not “take any cheats or shortcuts around that wild status quo.”

The prelude series will consist of five issues, with the first installment scheduled for release on June 3, 2026. This date serves as a strong indication that the second season of X-Men ’97 is still on course for a summer 2026 premiere, potentially arriving even sooner than anticipated.

Interestingly, the first season of the series also had a comic tie-in that launched shortly before its debut. The first issue was released just a week after the series premiered on Disney Plus, raising the possibility that the same timeline could apply to the upcoming season and its associated comic.

As excitement builds, fans can also look forward to two distinct covers for X-Men ’97: Season Two #1. The main cover is designed by Todd Nauck, while a variant inspired by both the first season and the video game Marvel vs. Capcom: Clash of Super Heroes comes from artist Jhony Caballero.

With both the comic series and the second season on the horizon, fans of X-Men ’97 have plenty to look forward to as they await further details about the show’s return.
