Fifth Crew Member Dies After U.S.-Flagged Speedboat Shootout

Cuban authorities confirmed on Thursday that a fifth crew member from a U.S.-flagged speedboat involved in a violent confrontation with the coast guard last week has succumbed to his injuries. The incident, which took place on February 25, 2024, has led to terrorism charges being filed against the surviving crew members, who are suspected of attempting to transport weapons into Cuba with the intention of undermining the government in Havana.

The deceased, identified as Roberto Alvarez Avila, died on March 4 from wounds sustained during the shootout. The Cuban coast guard had approached the vessel to request identification when the crew opened fire, prompting a lethal response. Four other individuals aboard the speedboat were killed during the exchange. The boat had come within one nautical mile of the Cuban shoreline, raising significant concerns about its intentions.

According to Cuban officials, the speedboat was carrying a substantial arsenal that included 14 rifles, 11 pistols, and nearly 13,000 rounds of ammunition. The Cuban Interior Ministry stated that the investigation into the incident is progressing with assistance from U.S. authorities, which includes evidence sharing and collaborative actions.

At least two of the individuals aboard the speedboat were identified as U.S. citizens, one of whom was killed in the incident. An official report from the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office in Florida noted that the owner of the boat claimed it had been stolen by an employee prior to the incident.

Misael Ortega Casanova, brother of one of the deceased, Michael Ortega Casanova, described his brother’s fixation on overthrowing the Cuban government as an “obsessive and diabolical” endeavor aimed at liberating Cuba from its communist rule. He expressed deep concern for the reckless nature of the mission, stating, “They became so obsessed that they didn’t think about the consequences nor their own lives.”

Cubans in the United States, along with Cuban American communities, have long protested against the current regime, citing various human rights violations. This incident highlights the ongoing tensions surrounding Cuba’s political climate and the lengths to which some individuals are willing to go in pursuit of change.
