New Documentary “Tirrenica” Explores Southern Italy’s Hidden Realities

A new documentary titled Tirrenica aims to present a nuanced view of Southern Italy, moving beyond the stereotypes often associated with the region. Directed by Rosario Minervini, the film is set to premiere on March 10, 2024, as part of the Newcomers Documentary competition at the Thessaloniki International Film Festival in Greece.

The narrative unfolds against the backdrop of the Salerno–Reggio Calabria highway, an ambitious infrastructure project initiated in the 1960s. Originally hailed as a significant engineering achievement, the highway was intended to bridge the economically disadvantaged south of Italy with its more prosperous northern counterpart. Yet, as the film’s synopsis reveals, the outcomes have not lived up to the grand expectations set by the Italian government.

Tirrenica explores the lives of individuals living along the edges of this highway, offering viewers a glimpse into their struggles and resilience. The film showcases a diverse array of characters, including a man who, after losing his job of 12 years, becomes a shepherd living in a caravan devoid of basic services. Other featured individuals include a collector of discarded objects, a marksman, and a civil rights activist named Francesca. These characters are introduced through vivid descriptions such as The Revolutionary, The Hoarder, The Shepherd, and The Sharpshooter.

The documentary highlights the stark contrast between the highway’s original promise and the reality faced by those in its vicinity. Minervini’s work reveals how the lengthy construction process—spanning over 60 years—has become emblematic of the struggles faced by Southern Italy. As outlined in the film’s synopsis, it exposes “the structural pathologies of the Italian state” and reinforces the concept of a “country of two speeds.”
