President Donald Trump has officially endorsed Montana U.S. Attorney Kurt Alme to fill the Senate seat now vacated by Steve Daines, who has opted not to seek a third term. Trump made the announcement on Truth Social, commending Daines for his twelve years of service in the Senate and two years in the House of Representatives, stating he “honorably served” the state.

In his post, Trump expressed his regret over Daines’ decision to leave, saying, “He did a job like few others are capable of doing but, sadly for our Country, Steve’s Term is up.” He emphasized his complete endorsement of Alme, describing him as “exceptional” and adding, “He will do a fantastic job as your next United States Senator from the Great State of Montana — HE WILL NOT LET YOU DOWN!”

Candidate filing for the Senate race in Montana closed at 17:00 on March 15, 2024. Daines’ status on the Montana Secretary of State’s website was subsequently updated to “withdrawn.” Alme previously served as Montana’s U.S. Attorney during Trump’s first term.

Political Support and Upcoming Race

Trump’s endorsement is bolstered by the backing of Montana Governor Greg Gianforte and Senator Tim Sheehy, who also expressed confidence in Alme’s capabilities. Gianforte remarked on Daines’ impact, stating, “Montana is stronger today because of Steve’s work to cut taxes, champion our agricultural industry internationally, and strengthen our national defense.”

Sheehy, reflecting on Daines’ political legacy, referred to him as “a giant in Montana politics.” He noted Daines’ leadership in flipping every statewide office to Republican control since 2012, highlighting his role in winning back Republican control of the U.S. Senate in 2024.

Amid the shifting political landscape, Seth Bodnar, former President of the University of Montana, has entered the Senate race as an independent, receiving support from former U.S. Senator Jon Tester. Ten additional candidates have filed to run in the primary set for June 2, 2024.

Senate Dynamics and Daines’ Legacy

The political dynamics in the Senate are poised for change, with Republicans currently holding a slight majority of 53 seats compared to the Democrats’ 45 seats and two independents, according to data from The Associated Press. Daines is the fifteenth senator to announce retirement ahead of the 2024 election cycle, marking the highest number of retirements in a single term since 2013.

Earlier this week, Ryan Zinke, a four-term Montana Representative, announced his retirement due to health issues. Zinke has since endorsed former staff member and radio talk show host Aaron Flint, who also has received Trump’s backing.
