Aiming to break a Guinness World Record for the longest throw of a rubber chicken, one man has turned his midlife crisis into an unexpected quest for achievement. As he approaches 40, he confronts the challenges of aging, career setbacks, and a shifting family dynamic, all while seeking a humorous yet meaningful way to reclaim his sense of accomplishment.

The journey began one spring morning when the author found himself unemployed and grappling with feelings of inadequacy. He observed the rapid growth of his children and felt the weight of his own stagnation. Seeking advice from experts, he learned that midlife struggles are common, but he felt a pressing need to achieve something noteworthy. The idea of throwing a rubber chicken came to him while watching a video of Osman Gürcü, a Turkish security guard who set the record at 114 feet, 9 inches.

“What harm could come of a humble attempt?” he pondered, embracing the absurdity of his goal. With newfound determination, he contacted Adrien Mellion, a throwing coach from ThrowsLab in California, who agreed to help him refine his technique.

Training for Success

In September, the author met Mellion at an athletic field in Modesto, where they discussed the importance of consistency and technique in throwing. Mellion emphasized the need for repetition and minor adjustments to maximize performance. Under his guidance, the author learned to grip the rubber chicken correctly and execute a throw similar to a discus motion.

After several practice sessions, the author achieved an unofficial throw of approximately 75 feet. Mellion encouraged him, noting that he could indeed break the record. This encouragement motivated the author to pursue the record seriously, leading to a virtual meeting with Gürcü, where they discussed the Guinness rules for the throw.

During their conversation, Gürcü shared valuable insights about the ideal rubber chicken specifications, emphasizing that the toy should weigh over 150 grams and be short enough to minimize drag during flight. The two exchanged tips and encouragement, fostering a sense of camaraderie as they both navigated the eccentric world of record-breaking.

Facing Challenges

As the author prepared for his official attempt, he trained secretly in a local park to avoid curious onlookers. Using advice from Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow, he focused on “working in silence,” honing his skills without drawing attention. He practiced with various rubber chickens, aiming to find the perfect one for his record attempt.

On the day of his official throw in December, he gathered a team of surveyors to ensure compliance with Guinness regulations. Despite selecting a field near the San Francisco Bay that seemed ideal, he faced setbacks when the surveyors informed him of a slight slope in the terrain. This unexpected challenge meant he would have to adjust his throwing angle against the wind.

Despite the complications, the author completed his attempts with a best throw of about 103 feet, falling short of Gürcü’s record. However, rather than feeling defeated, he experienced a sense of relief and accomplishment. The support from friends and family, along with encouragement from children watching nearby, added to the positive atmosphere.

Reflecting on the experience, the author recognized the significance of pursuing goals, even in seemingly trivial endeavors. The journey had shifted his focus from personal doubts to a communal sense of accomplishment. He found joy in the process and the connections formed along the way, reinforcing the idea that midlife can be a time of growth and opportunity.

While he may not have achieved the world record, the experience of throwing rubber chickens served as a reminder of resilience and the importance of pursuing passions, no matter how unconventional. As he moves forward, he embraces the uncertainty of midlife, ready to write his own narrative—one filled with laughter, challenges, and the thrill of flight.
