Sarah Shahi Reveals Insights on Love and Divorce in New Book
Actress Sarah Shahi has opened up about her personal journey and relationships in her new book, Life Is Lifey: The A to Z’s on Navigating Life’s Messy Middle, which was released on January 27, 2024. The memoir not only addresses her high-profile divorce from actor Steve Howey but also shares insights from her romantic experiences, including her relationship with former partner Adam Demos.
Reflections on Marriage and Personal Growth
Shahi candidly discusses her decision to file for divorce from Howey after nearly twelve years of marriage. While filming the Netflix series Sex/Life, she experienced a significant personal transformation. In her book, she reflects, “As fate so divinely orchestrated, while I was filming Sex/Life, I was going through my own personal transformation.” She elaborates on her struggles, stating that her marriage, which lasted for almost two decades, was filled with challenges beyond the fantasy of a past relationship.
“The years of frustration that came from living a life well below my full potential finally came to a head. I was tired, bloated, and uninspired,” Shahi writes. The couple, who met on the set of Reba, married in 2009 and share three children. Shahi filed for divorce in 2020, citing a need for change and personal growth.
In an exclusive interview with Us Weekly, Shahi expressed a positive outlook on her past relationship with Howey. “It worked out for both parties involved. There is no failure here,” she remarked. “I was in a relationship for 18 years and have three beautiful kids. It is by every definition a success to me, and we have a beautiful relationship as co-parents.”
Navigating New Relationships
Following her marriage, Shahi found love with her Sex/Life co-star, Demos. However, she later confirmed their split after five years of dating. The emotional toll of these relationships has been profound. “There was an element of the relationship that people really felt belonged to them, which was very sweet and heartwarming,” she said about her connection with Demos. Yet, she also noted the challenge of navigating public scrutiny during personal heartbreaks.
Shahi’s book delves deep into her emotional experiences, including the moment she informed Howey that she wanted a divorce. She recalls struggling to articulate her feelings, saying, “I finally love myself more. Those five words took ten years to say.” The conversation took place shortly before the COVID-19 pandemic led to widespread lockdowns, complicating her return to the dating scene.
Amid the emotional upheaval, Shahi has shared insights on her journey to self-love and empowerment. She emphasizes the importance of recognizing when a relationship is no longer serving one’s well-being, stating, “It’s important to show the kids, in my opinion, that when something is out of sync, you have to have the courage to let it go.”
While Life Is Lifey focuses on Shahi’s personal growth, it also provides practical advice for readers. She reflects on past relationships, including those that shaped her understanding of love and self-worth. The book serves as a resource for women seeking to navigate their own complex emotional landscapes.
Shahi uses her experiences to encourage others to embrace their sexuality and prioritize self-care. “After years of extensive personal research, I’ve realized that embracing your sexuality is like unlocking the cheat code to your best self,” she writes, highlighting the importance of exploring personal desires.
Through her memoir, Shahi aims to inspire readers to make courageous decisions in their lives, emphasizing that personal fulfillment is attainable even in the face of adversity. Life Is Lifey is now available for those seeking guidance in their own life journeys.
