Gold prices soared on January 28, 2024, with new record levels reached in the domestic futures market. The surge in prices is attributed to global uncertainty, a weakening US dollar, and robust investment demand for bullion. On the Multi Commodity Exchange, gold’s February futures jumped nearly 3%, surpassing the Rs. 1.62 lakh per 10 grams mark for the first time during early trading hours.

In parallel with gold, silver’s March futures also experienced significant growth, rising approximately 6% to a record Rs. 3,77,655 per kilogram. The price of 24K gold increased by Rs. 322, with ten grams trading at Rs. 1,65,170. Similarly, the price of 22K gold rose by Rs. 295, reaching Rs. 1,51,400 for ten grams. In various cities, the price of ten grams of 24K gold stood at Rs. 1,65,170 in Mumbai and Kolkata, while it was Rs. 1,67,340 in Chennai and Rs. 1,65,300 in Delhi.

Factors Driving Gold Prices Higher

Several factors are fueling the current rally in gold prices. The US dollar index fell by around 0.3%, marking its lowest level in four years. This depreciation has made gold more affordable for international buyers, contributing to increased demand. Additionally, rising geopolitical tensions and concerns about new US trade regulations, including potential tariff threats, have heightened the appeal of gold as a safe-haven asset.

Recent data from the United States indicates a substantial decline in consumer confidence, which reinforces predictions of an impending economic downturn. Market participants anticipate that the Federal Reserve will keep interest rates unchanged in January and may implement two interest rate cuts later this year. Such a scenario typically supports non-yielding assets like gold, as lower interest rates decrease the opportunity cost of holding bullion.

Global Bullion Market Trends

In international markets, spot gold experienced a slight pullback after reaching record highs earlier in the week. It traded near $5,160 per ounce, having briefly touched levels just below $5,200. Silver, despite its minor retreat, has gained over 50% year-to-date and continues to demonstrate strong momentum across precious metals.

Key technical levels for gold on the international front show support at $5,084 and $5,055, with resistance at $5,174 and $5,220 per troy ounce. For silver, support is found at $102.40 and $98, while resistance levels are noted at $112 and $118 per troy ounce. On the MCX, gold’s support levels are at Rs. 1,56,600 and Rs. 1,55,000, with resistance at Rs. 1,59,800 and Rs. 1,62,000. Silver support sits at Rs. 3,50,000 and Rs. 3,44,000, while resistance is at Rs. 3,65,000 and Rs. 3,78,000, according to market analyst Jain.

As the global economic landscape continues to shift, the demand for gold and silver is expected to remain robust, driven by investor sentiment and ongoing geopolitical concerns.
