Jets GM Darren Mougey Comments on No. 1 Draft Pick Plans

The New York Jets are grappling with the challenge of needing a quarterback while holding the No. 2 overall pick in an NFL draft that features just one elite quarterback prospect. General Manager Darren Mougey expressed his desire to trade up for the opportunity to select Fernando Mendoza, but he remains skeptical about the feasibility of such a move, particularly with the Las Vegas Raiders holding the coveted No. 1 pick.

Mougey indicated that he would reach out to his counterpart at the Raiders, John Spytek, to discuss possibilities surrounding the top draft selection. Despite this, he conveyed a sense of realism about the situation, stating, “Absolutely, we’ll talk about all those things, but I don’t think that’s happening,” as reported by Rich Cimini of ESPN.

To facilitate a trade for the No. 1 pick, the Jets possess a significant arsenal of draft capital. Alongside their own selections, they hold the Indianapolis Colts‘ first-round picks in 2026 and 2027, in addition to the higher of either the Dallas Cowboys or Green Bay Packers‘ first-round pick in 2027. This positions the Jets with the ability to potentially offer a package of up to six first-round picks, a scenario that would mark one of the largest trades in NFL history.

Despite the enticing prospects of such a trade, Mougey does not view it as a realistic option. The Jets’ situation underscores the complexities and challenges of NFL draft negotiations, particularly when attempting to secure a player of Mendoza’s caliber.
